Avignon
The Saint-Benezet Bridge
The legend surrounding this bridge became part of the popular culture in the 12th century. Construction of the bridge was a challenge at the time and it is the oldest structure built on the Rhone between Lyon and the sea in the 12th century. The bridge then measured 900 meters long and boasted 22 arches. In the middle ages, this bridge became an integral part of the pilgrimages between Italy and Spain. It also became indispensable for the Pope and its entourage when they first came to Avignon in the 15th century. At that time, the bridge was the most direct route connecting the many residences occupied by the cardinals and the Popes Palace located inside the fortified walls of Avignon.
